Life On The Refrigerator Door by Alice Kuipers review

This is a very interesting take on the usual book style. I enjoy books that change the way a book is written.

This book is best explained by the blurb on the back.
"Making time for those you love, when time itself is running out"

The story is about a mother and a daughter who both lead very different and very busy lives. Claire is a young 15 year old girl who is more concerned with boys, friends and her social status rather than spending time with her mother. Claire's mother is a doctor who is on call to deliver babies, hence her life is a whole different level of busy.

The story is written as small hand written notes on the fridge, anything from we need milk to more serious matters.

Without telling too much of the story, a tragedy occurs (her mother develops breast cancer) within this family unit which shows how important it is to find time for the ones you love.

pros:
This book is really touching, it has a good moral - spending time with the ones you love, not letting life get in the way. I loved it until the last part.

I liked how short and sweet it was, the messages were small and to the point, they also help empathise with the characters without really knowing them. the story was very heartfelt even though it is quite small and simple including daily stuff like shopping lists.
The cute little drawings on the pages also made the book interesting and different from the average book.

how they explain the cancer is simple because obviously the mother didn't want to reveal too much to her daughter and i actually like that aspect, they reveal enough to make the audience empathise without overloading the reader with information.

cons:
I loved it all the way up to the last maybe 15 pages. The story seemed to speed up and feel really rushed, i feel if they slowed the last part down and explained it a bit better it would've worked better for me. But really that was my only critic. But thinking about it now, that is the nature of cancer so its really not a critic at all. I understand what the author tried to do to display cancer as well as they can.
Overall i give this book 4 stars. its a very short yet excellent read that will leave you racing to the ones you love.
